Why arcade racers still beat the sims on mobile

Why arcade racers still beat the sims on mobile

July 29, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Every year someone ports a serious racing sim to phones, and every year I bounce off it. The controls just don't suit the format. Give me an arcade racer any day, and Neon Drift Rally reminded me exactly why.

Arcade racing is about feel, not physics. The drift mechanic in Neon Drift Rally is forgiving enough that you always feel in control, but deep enough that mastering it is its own reward. Chaining slides to build boost is the entire game, and it's wonderful.

Sims ask you to manage braking points and tire wear with inputs that were designed for a wheel and pedals. On a touchscreen that's just frustrating. Arcade racers lean into what phones do well: quick, tactile, immediate.

If you've been disappointed by racing games on mobile, I'd bet you tried the wrong kind. Go for something that prioritizes fun over fidelity and the whole genre opens back up.
